This week’s nuggets: July 18-22, 2017

By Jim July 22, 2017

Discussed on the podcast this week were the role of sardines in an LCHF diet, the connection of sugar consumption to markers of obesity, and a comparison of low-carb and low-fat diet-results in an interesting new study. Subscribe to the Low Carb Nugget through any of the following services: Apple Podcasts Google Play Music Stitcher TuneIn (With the Amazon Echo, use the command, “Alexa, play The Low Carb Nugget Podcast on TuneIn.”) … [Read more...]

A low-carb dieter’s blood test results (updated)

By Jim April 26, 2017

Blood tests

When I first began eating my low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) diet, and losing pounds and inches around the middle, I encountered the occasional nay-sayer -- someone who was sure all that fat in my food was going to clog up my arteries and kill me dead, sooner rather than later. I've escaped that fate for six years. Indeed, within a few months of starting my low-carb diet, I had significantly reduced my belly-fat, and my blood-pressure. Those were powerful indicators that I was improving my odds … [Read more...]

My LCHF week in review: November 2 – 8

By Jim November 12, 2015

Starting weight = 213.00 lbs Ending weight = 211.8 lbs So I'm up a pound since my last full report two weeks ago, but down a pound since my returning from vacation a week ago. I didn't fast last week. I was consistent in my eating patterns, though. The daily averages shown above are a good reflection of how I ate day to day. But time is running out to reach my goal of weighing 199 pounds by the end of 2015. Indeed, it seems impossible to reach that goal. I'd have to lose 1.8 pounds or better … [Read more...]

My LCHF week in review: October 19 – 25

By Jim October 27, 2015

Starting weight = 212.4 lbs. Ending weight = 210.8 lbs. I was more consistent this past week. The averages shown in the table are a good reflection of what I ate every day. And I lost a little weight. Not much else to say. … [Read more...]

My LCHF week in review: October 5 – 11

By Jim October 14, 2015

Starting weight = 212.6 lbs. Ending weight = 212.0 lbs. I lost just over half a pound for the week. My daily intake averages were very similar to the previous week, in which I lost two-tenths of a pound. I haven't got much to say except I'm tired of hanging around the 212 weight level. Time to move on.       … [Read more...]

My LCHF week in review: Sept. 27 – Oct. 4

By Jim October 7, 2015

Starting weight = 212.8 lbs. Ending weight = 212.6 lbs. My eating pattern was similar this past week to the week before, so it's not surprising that the results were also similar. I did cut my average daily carbs a bit from 57 grams to 50 grams. Perhaps that accounts for my very modest weight loss of two-tenths of a pound as opposed to a gain of that same amount the week prior. My average percent of calories from fat only increased from 66% to 67%. I think I need to get that percentage up to … [Read more...]

My LCHF week in review: September 7 – 13

By Jim September 15, 2015

Starting weight = 213.2 lbs. Ending weight = 211.8 lbs. For the third straight week, I lost weight. It was 1.4 pounds this week. For the three week-span, I've lost a total of 4.4 pounds. Once again, I skipped breakfast on two days -- Thursday and Saturday. On those days, my total calories were 200 - 300 lower than the 1,649 average shown in the table above. Maybe I'll try a full-day fast at some point. Then again, I like to eat, and my goal is to reach and maintain a healthy weight without … [Read more...]

My LCHF week in review: August 31 – September 6

By Jim September 8, 2015

Starting weight = 214 lbs. Ending weight = 213.2 lbs. Yipee! For the second week in a row, I lost weight. True, it was slightly less than a pound, but it's still a trend -- a positive one. I had a couple of higher carb days, but I also skipped breakfast a couple days (the so-called 16/8 fast). So it pretty much evened out. We were at the lake for the Labor Day weekend. Home now, and plan to stay here a while. Settle down a bit. With the passing of Labor Day, summer has unofficially ended in … [Read more...]

My LCHF week in review: August 24 – 30

By Jim September 1, 2015

Starting weight = 216.2 lbs. Ending weight = 214 lbs. I lost 2.2 pounds last week, and my weight is back to where it was three weeks ago. I tried intermittent fasting last week, as suggested by reader BobM. I skipped breakfast on two days during the week (Thursday and Saturday). It wasn't much of a problem to do that. On my LCHF diet, I don't get "hangry" anymore. I admit I was ready to eat lunch both of those days, but not desperate. My average total calories and net carbs for the two … [Read more...]
