By JA November 4, 2017

Low Carb Nugget podcast

Update and Replays Low Carb Nugget 72 I'm working on another project, and need to take some time off from the podcast. So tonight I'm presenting a "best of" episode that combines a couple earlier shows that I really like. But first a personal diet update . . . … [Read more...]

Keto reboot at four weeks

By JA October 23, 2017

I started my Keto Diet Reboot four weeks ago today. I'm five and a half pound lighter now than I was then. That's a slow rate of weight loss, just under a pound and a half per week. However, I had a lost weekend in the middle of the four weeks. It was a nice lost weekend spent with Anita at a romantic bed and breakfast, and I did my best to stay the low-carb, high-fat course. I thought I did a good job, but when we got home, I found I'd gained back over two pounds. (See this earlier post.) … [Read more...]

Control what you can

By JA October 6, 2017

weight control vs diet control

Weight control vs. diet control No one has direct control over their body weight, percentage of body fat, or waist circumference. Indirect control, maybe, but not direct control. For example, you can't tell your body "lose five pounds" and expect it to obey. You can't wake up and decide your waist-size for the day will be 36 inches. Sure, you could decide to pull out size-36 pants, and try to squeeze into them, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to. … [Read more...]

First pound

2-egg cheese omelette with salsa

Send up the sky-rockets! My "Keto Diet Reboot" has produced a one pound weight loss. Well, sort of. After the first day, the scale showed a half-pound gain. Then, after the second day, the scale showed a one pound weight loss. So, for the duration, I've lost a net of a half-pound. It's a start, I guess. I'm not putting much stock in it yet. Was it water weight or body fat that I lost over-night? Or lean muscle? I don't know. A month or so from now, maybe I'll know. By then, I'm expecting my … [Read more...]

Strongest dieting motives are personal (LCN 58)

By Jim September 19, 2017

The strongest dieting motives are personal Low Carb Nugget 58 Typically, people diet to improve their health, their appearance, their mood and confidence, and their chances at living longer. All of those are good motivations, and the nice thing is, they're connected; you can have them all. But the strongest motivations are always the most personal. … [Read more...]

This week’s nuggets: September 5-9, 2017

By Jim September 9, 2017

This is the weekly digest for my Low Carb Nugget Podcast. In the latest episodes of the podcast, I reviewed the goals and plans for my upcoming keto diet reboot, considered the top three LCHF survival foods that are nutritious, shelf-stable and easy to find, and examined a recent study that found eating a modest amount of plant-based foods might help you live longer. Each title below links to the episode's show notes at LCHFGazette.com. … [Read more...]

Mice live longer, healthier on ketogenic diet, studies claim

By Jim September 6, 2017

ketogenic diet mouse

A couple new studies find that a ketogenic diet promotes a longer, healthier lifespan. That's great, but the results have only been confirmed for lab mice. I've written about mouse-based dietary studies a few times over the years. None have impressed me much. Some have seemed quite odd. For instance, way back in 2011, I wrote a post entitled "Eating fish makes mice fat, study claims." Scientists fed some little rodents farmed raised salmon, and some the same diet without salmon, and found the … [Read more...]
