This week’s nuggets: June 6 -10, 2017

By Jim June 10, 2017

Low Carb Nugget podcast cover

It was touch and go, but I managed my usual three podcasts this week for The Low Carb Nugget. The problem was a bad cold that affected my voice -- and not for the better. Luckily, it's a recorded show, so I could cut out fits of coughing. #13 Historical interlude: K-rations, sugar, and cigarettes On the 73rd anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy, Jim takes a look at the field rations American soldiers carried with them into combat. The ingredients were as much about boosting morale as … [Read more...]

Study: low-carb diet reduces food cravings

By Jim May 17, 2017

A study in The FASEB Journal (which, as you probably know, well-read person that you are, is the Official Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology) finds that consuming a low-carb, high-fat diet is "associated with reductions in cravings for all food categories." The researchers define a craving as "an intense desire to consume a particular food that is difficult to resist." … [Read more...]

Sugar, soybean oil, and you

By Jim July 25, 2015

Saturday Short Takes 1. Putting Added Sugar in Context The FDA is proposing to add information to food labels that would tell you the percent of the daily value of added sugar you'll be getting per serving ("Proposed Label Would Give Context to Sugar in Foods," Mary Clare Jalonick, Associated Press). The base recommendation would be to consume no more than 50 grams of added sugar in a day, which is ten percent of a 2,000 calorie diet. One bottle of soda pop could blow your daily sugar … [Read more...]

It’s time to fix the dietary guidelines

By Jim June 12, 2015

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is age-old advice that's hard to argue with. The problem is, people often disagree about whether a thing is broken or not. That's the case with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, first foisted on American citizens by their federal government in 1980, and since revised every five years. This year will see the release of the next revision. But will it be a fix? Many see the Dietary Guidelines as seriously flawed and in need of fixing. I'm in that camp -- no … [Read more...]

The need for carb-free beverages — and friendship

By Jim June 6, 2015

Saturday Short Takes "Low-carb beer lures young men," Adrian Thomas, The Shout. "Low-carb beer finds unlikely niche," James Atkinson, Australian Brew News. According to an industry study, low-carb beer now accounts for nearly 25% of beer consumption in Australia, compared to just 3% in 2006. However, it isn't clear that low-carb dieting is the reason. The largest group of low-carb beer drinkers in Australia are males aged 24 years and younger. Typically, men in that age group aren't as … [Read more...]

Salad is better with eggs

By Jim June 5, 2015

Obviously, eggs add protein, fat, nutrients and taste -- plus a dash of contrasting color -- to a green salad, but it turns out they do even more than that. According to a new clinical study, whole eggs on a salad also help people better absorb the nutrients from the raw veggies. Salad is better with eggs. The study from Purdue University found that the lipids in the eggs -- that is, the fatty acids -- increased the absorption of the carotenoids from a variety of vegetables. While the fats in … [Read more...]

Shoddy reporting on the diet science beat

By Jim May 30, 2015

Saturday Short Takes When it comes to reporting on the latest diet science news, it's hard to know who to trust. Reporters covering the diet science beat seldom display much in the way of scientific acumen or plain curiosity. Their editors don't seem to care as long as they can illustrate the stories with close-ups of pretty girls putting things in their mouths. 1. The Great Chocolate Con Can eating dark chocolate every day help help you lose weight? Yes, according to a study published … [Read more...]
