My low-carb week in review: April 12 – April 18, 2015

By Jim April 19, 2015

The maddening logic of metabolism struck again this week. I ate according to my low carb diet all week -- no splurges, no wild indulgences, no day out of the norm. For the week, I averaged 1,727 calories, 139g fat, 26g net carbs, and 91g protein per day. That average daily calorie total was significantly lower than for past five weeks, and the macro-nutrient percentages were about the same. All in all, a great week  of sensible low-carb eating, and yet I gained a bit of weight, tipping … [Read more...]

My low-carb week in review: April 5 – April 11, 2015

By Jim April 12, 2015

In dieting, as in most areas of life, averages can be deceptive. Take my daily averages of calories and net carbs consumed for last week -- 1, 831 and 39 grams respectively. And 72% of calories from fat. Not bad, not bad at all. Those averages imply a low-cal, low-carb consistency over the seven days, a steely resolve to eat the right way every day. Like I said, averages can be deceptive. On Thursday, I ate a single meal at Applebee's that ballooned my day's calories to almost 2, 600. My net … [Read more...]

My low-carb week in review: March 29 – April 4, 2015

By Jim April 5, 2015

As I predicted, my weight loss hit a plateau this week. I dropped a whopping two-tenths of a pound, going from 224.8 pounds a week ago to 224.6 pounds today. Oh well. I attribute my stall to the X-factor. I don't know what the X-factor is, which is why I call it the X-factor. According to my data, I ate significantly fewer calories per day for this last period than the one before. Percentage of calories from fat was about the same. I have no reason to think my record-keeping was any less … [Read more...]

My low-carb week in review: March 22-28, 2015

By Jim March 29, 2015

I lost 3.6 pounds this week. (Correction! I only lost 2.4 pounds for the week, going from 227.2 to 224.8. I had the wrong number in mind for the previous week. I apparently was looking back two weeks. JA, 4-26-15.) I'm happy about the drop, of course, but wary. Was that all fat, or was some of it water? Based on my past experience, I mistrust any weight loss greater than two pounds per week. It's likely to be followed by a week of little or no weight loss. But, then, 3.6 pounds lost this week, … [Read more...]

My low-carb week in review: March 15-21, 2015

By Jim March 22, 2015

It was a good week. I kept my daily averages to 34 net carbs and just under 2,000 calories, with 73% of my calories coming from fat, all identical to the week before. (If nothing else, I'm consistent!) As a result, I lost almost two pounds. My weight dropped from 229 to 227.2 pounds. For my low-carb reboot, now entering its third week, I'm down 4.8 pounds. There were a couple challenges. On Thursday, we ate out at our favorite Chinese restaurant in the area, which had been closed a year … [Read more...]

My low-carb week in review: March 8-14, 2015

By Jim March 15, 2015

The table here shows my average daily intake of fat, carbs, and protein for the week of March 8 to March 14, 2015. This was the first full week of my low-carb reboot. Not that I ever stopped eating a reduced carbohydrate diet in general, but I 'd gotten a bit lax and allowed some "carb creep."  I was probably eating excessive protein, too.  As a result, my weight loss that began in 2011 had stopped and then reversed itself. I'd gone from a low of 207 pounds in early 2012 back up to 232 pounds. … [Read more...]

Progress Report for 2-4-2012

By Jim February 4, 2012

Let me say up front that I am not dead.  Nor have I fallen off the wagon and gained 40 pounds.  In fact, I am continuing to lose weight -- if slowly and without thinking about it much. This morning, eleven months into my low-carb way of eating, I tipped the scales at a new low of 207.6 pounds.  That makes a total weight loss of more than 52 pounds. To celebrate, I mashed up half an avocado to mix into my scrambled eggs. OK, it wasn't really to celebrate.  I'd eaten the other half yesterday, … [Read more...]

Progress Report 9-5-11: Six months on a low-carb diet

By Jim September 6, 2011

After half-a-year eating the low-carb way, I have good news to report on my weight and other health factors.  Last Friday I had my annual physical exam. The doctor's scale confirmed that I was 44 pounds lighter than at my physical a year ago, and 47 pounds lighter than my all-time highest recorded weight.  My doctor characterized my blood lipid numbers as "the best ever." "I'd prescribe a lot fewer meds if my patients just lost weight like this," he said. He noted that my Body-Mass Index a … [Read more...]

Progress Report 8-6-11

By Jim August 6, 2011

The scale shows that my weight today is 219.8 pounds.

On May 7, already a couple months into my low-carb way of eating, I set a weight goal of 215 pounds by Labor Day 2011.  At that time, I weighed 241 pounds.  Today, I weighed in at 219.8 pounds. Five weeks ago, on July 3 when I gave my last progress report, I weighed 227.6 pounds.  Thus, I lost a touch under eight pounds in those five weeks, an average of 1.6 pounds per week. My weekly weight-loss average since May 7 is 1.63 pounds. Before setting my goal, I had already lost about 20 … [Read more...]

Progress report 7-3-11

By Jim July 3, 2011

On May 7, I set a weight goal of 215 pounds by Labor Day 2011.  At that time, I weighed around 241 pounds.  Yesterday, I weighed in at 227.6 pounds.  So in the past two months I have lost 13.4 pounds on my low-carb way of eating. The pace has slowed. In the first two months of low-carb eating, I lost about 19 pounds.  Nevertheless, I am on schedule to meet my Labor Day weight goal, perhaps with time/ pounds to spare. Frankly, weight loss is a secondary issue for me.  More important is … [Read more...]
