Obesogenic: a new word for an old idea

By Jim September 13, 2011

A commentary by Jane E. Brody in yesterday's New York Times has a promising title: Attacking the Obesity Epidemic by First Figuring Out Its Cause. You have to admit, there's logic in that approach. There's logic, too, in Brody's central claim that we live in an environment that encourages, or at least enables, frequent eating and discourages, or at least enables the avoidance of,  exercise. But is that environment "obesogenic" as Brody and some of her sources claim? Does the modern world … [Read more...]

Progress Report 9-5-11: Six months on a low-carb diet

By Jim September 6, 2011

After half-a-year eating the low-carb way, I have good news to report on my weight and other health factors.  Last Friday I had my annual physical exam. The doctor's scale confirmed that I was 44 pounds lighter than at my physical a year ago, and 47 pounds lighter than my all-time highest recorded weight.  My doctor characterized my blood lipid numbers as "the best ever." "I'd prescribe a lot fewer meds if my patients just lost weight like this," he said. He noted that my Body-Mass Index a … [Read more...]

Low-carb omnivores of the world, unite!

By Jim September 1, 2011

Over the months that I've been eating a low-carb diet, my views on what that diet is have evolved considerably. First, at the start, I thought my goal was simply to lose weight, and that any improvements in my health would be the result of eliminating the beach ball of blubber that was my middle. Second, I thought that eating a low-carbohydrate diet meant eating lots of meat relative to other kinds of foods. In other words, being more carnivore than omnivore. Now I see better health as my … [Read more...]

Targeting a healthy weight loss

By Jim August 27, 2011

In weight-loss and all other endeavors, goals are vital to success. To put it less pretentiously, we may not always hit what we aim at in life, but the odds go up when we are, in fact, aiming. Dumb luck carries you only so far. (Believe me, I've tested the limits of dumb luck. Planning is better.) Some goals are obvious. For a mountain climber, only getting to the top will do.  But there will be intermediate goals along the climb to the summit. Other goals are trickier to set. Over … [Read more...]

Italian Green Bean Salad

By Jim August 25, 2011

For years, Anita has been putting together a summer salad with green beans, tomatoes and red onion. It's an old family recipe. She calls it "Italian Green Bean Salad" in honor of her father, who's an old Italian. It's a delicious, nutritious summer treat, and reasonably low-carb. This summer, with a bumper crop of beans, cucumbers, hot peppers and tomatoes growing in our backyard garden, we were looking forward to making salads with the freshest, most organic of ingredients. Then blossom-end … [Read more...]

Another typical day in my life after carbs: 8-15-11

By Jim August 16, 2011

The first time I wrote about a typical day of eating low-carb, it turned out not to be completely typical. But it was a real day. The truth is, I don't have a set routine, a rigid plan, but just some general guidelines. Mostly, I aim to keep my total net carbs per day under 45 and my total calories under 2,100. (Net carbs are total carbohydrates minus fiber.) I pay little direct attention to calories. If I only eat when I'm hungry and avoid grains, starchy vegetables, sugary treats and … [Read more...]

News report: cut carbs to hold off diabetes

By Jim August 10, 2011

Besides tracking my own weight-loss and healthy living progress, recording low-carb  recipes, and showing off my considerable vocabulary (or lexicon) on this blog, I also keep an eye on media reports about diet, nutrition and fitness. Frequently, I am angered by the stubborn low-fat, high-carb bias of these reports, as well as their general lack of informed thoughtfulness, as was the case in yesterday's post on the claim that saturated fat may be the cause of inflammation. Every now and … [Read more...]

Progress Report 8-6-11

By Jim August 6, 2011

The scale shows that my weight today is 219.8 pounds.

On May 7, already a couple months into my low-carb way of eating, I set a weight goal of 215 pounds by Labor Day 2011.  At that time, I weighed 241 pounds.  Today, I weighed in at 219.8 pounds. Five weeks ago, on July 3 when I gave my last progress report, I weighed 227.6 pounds.  Thus, I lost a touch under eight pounds in those five weeks, an average of 1.6 pounds per week. My weekly weight-loss average since May 7 is 1.63 pounds. Before setting my goal, I had already lost about 20 … [Read more...]

Yes, tax bad food — after we all agree on what it is

By Jim July 30, 2011

Because thou art vegan-leaning, shall there be no bacon cheeseburgers? Taxing other people's vices always seems like a win-win. It allows the majority to feel holier-than-thou and adds money to the public coffers. For instance, I've favored the enormous taxes placed on tobacco.  As you can probably guess, I'm not a smoker.  I have no vested interests that keep me from seeing the logic of the standard public health argument. Smoking is implicated in widespread health problems that cost … [Read more...]

Why Americans say they diet

By Jim July 28, 2011

More Americans try to reduce fat than any other dietary item

More American adults say they have changed their diets to increase their intake of fruits and vegetables (71%) than say they have changed their diets to lose weight (65%).  Right away, you have to wonder how honest the people polled were.  Or you have to wonder if they know what constitutes a fruit and vegetable. Two-thirds of Americans say they changed their diet to improve their health.  Only one-third say it was to change their appearance.  I'm with the majority on this question, but who … [Read more...]
